Which Burial Ointments were present on the Shroud of Turin?

Giovanni Fazio

This article examines the debated presence of burial ointments and aromatic substances on the Shroud of Turin, with particular attention to aloe and myrrh. It compares conflicting scientific findings with evidence from pollen studies, the effects attributed to the 1532 Chambéry fire, and the Gospel accounts of the burial of Jesus. The paper argues that aromatic oils associated with other plants may have been used in burial preparation, while the large mixture of aloe and myrrh brought by Nicodemus was likely present at the tomb but not applied to the Shroud before the Sabbath.
